What I Wore When I Went To Artists For Aid
What I Wore When:
I went to “Artists For Aid” in LA over the past weekend.
Earlier this month my little sister had called me in a panic. Pre-sale tickets for “Artists For Aid” would go up for sale in as little as 5 minutes. I was driving so as big sisters do I delegated and said “Lock in we are NOT missing this”.
Not only was it a dream line-up, but it was also for the humanitarian crisis of our time: the active genocides and atrocities happening in Palestine and Sudan.
After much anticipation the day had finally arrived, and I decided to double down on my Palestinian roots.
The key part of my outfit was my Vela Scarves Kuffiyeh brown print (stolen from my older sisters closet) and a thrifted brown suede butterfly perforated top and beaded bottom from Day to Day Collective in Little Italy, SD.
I often find myself reaching for a thrifted pieces because I am not contributing to the overconsumption of fast fashion but rather repurposing a previously loved item.
Buying things that are unethically made sometimes feels unavoidable, but I will still attempt to shop consciously when I can. Going second-hand ensures you’re not adding to the demand of fast fashion.
Rocking my Kuffiyeh hijab and vintage outfit, we attended the event that raised over 5.5 million dollars in aid! Inshallah this is merely the start.
I couldn’t help but reflect that I was so immensely grateful to everybody that showed up for these causes that historically were only seen as ONLY muslim causes. They are humanitarian causes that every single person should care about. At this point those who do not see it for what it is are being deliberately blind. Social consciousness should pervade both the big and little, from who we choose to support to what we choose to wear day to day.
